Resources for Mixed Effects Models
The main advantage of these models is that they can represent hierarchical dependencies in the data (e.g. datapoints from the same participant, but also participants from different groups, etc.). These models are typically used for behavioral data, but not exclusively (see here for EEG examples) and they are typically implemented in R (but see this link for Julia).
For someone just starting to work with these models I would first suggest one of the online introductions or the Andy Field book chapter. Some of us are visual learners and certain concepts tend to stick better if there are ways of representing them visually. Linear Mixed Models in Linguistics and Psychology: A Comprehensive Introduction by Shravan Vasishth, Daniel Schad, Audrey Bürki & Reinhold Kliegl. This is a pretty comprehensive book about mixed effects models that’s aimed at cognitive scientists working with behavioral data. This is a very reliable source, but I think it’s a bit much for an introduction. It can be downloaded from here

Discovering statistics using R by Andy Field also has a chapter on mixed effects models. This is a great introductory chapter but unfortunately not available online.
